Cavs head up north to battle Raptors

Basketball Betting Lines

02/26/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Coming off one of their most impressive performances of the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers wrap up a short road trip with tonight's clash against the Toronto Raptors from the Air Canada Centre.

The Cavaliers head to Canada after besting the Boston Celtics last night in a battle of two of the Eastern Conference's top teams, using 36 points from superstar LeBron James and a huge fourth quarter to exit TD Garden with a 108-88 victory over the Atlantic Division leaders.

Cleveland trailed by one point heading into the final period, but outscored the Celtics by a whopping 35-14 margin over the last 12 minutes to prevail. Mo Williams led the charge by scoring 14 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Cavs ended a string of nine straight losses on the road to Boston.

The win was Cleveland's first at TD Garden since January 3, 2007.

"You get the monkey off your back, [but] don't look too far into it though," said James, who added nine assists and seven rebounds on the night. "We played well enough to win, but we have another game [Friday] against Toronto and we hope to play the same way."

The Cavaliers will have to play tonight without the services of Shaquille O'Neal after the veteran center sprained his right thumb in the second quarter of Thursday's triumph. The perennial All-Star had scored 20 points in each of his team's two games prior to last night.

Toronto will also be minus one of its top players this evening, with standout forward Chris Bosh slated to sit out a fourth straight contest due to a sprained ankle. The Raptors won their first two tests without their leading scorer, defeating also-rans New Jersey and Washington last week, but clearly missed Bosh's presence in Wednesday's 101-87 home loss to Portland.

The Raptors shot a mediocre 44.7 percent from the field and were held under 100 points for the first time since January 3, ending a franchise-record 20- game streak of eclipsing the century mark.

Hedo Turkoglu managed 24 points for Toronto and Jarrett Jack compiled 18 points and eight assists in the loss, only the Raptors' third in their last 14 outings.

Down 62-54 with less than 7 1/2 minutes to go in the third quarter, Toronto went on a 9-2 run and pulled within one on Amir Johnson's basket with 4:47 remaining in the period. Portland answered with a 9-0 burst shortly afterward, however, and the Raptors never got closer than seven points down the rest of the way.

"We just let them have too many easy baskets," Turkoglu said. "I don't know what their fast break points were [Wednesday], but we let them have too many easy points."

Toronto still owns a strong 21-8 record at home this season, but has dropped two of its last three tilts as the host. The Raptors did post a 101-91 victory over Cleveland at the Air Canada Centre back on October 28, although the Cavs exacted revenge with a 108-100 decision in Ohio on January 19.

Cleveland has won six of seven and 10 of the past 12 meetings between these teams and is 6-3 over its last nine visits to the Air Canada Centre.

Big 12 Conference betting odds

Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.

Work left to do:

Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.

Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.

Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
