Berdych into Miami semis

Key Biscayne, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Big Czech Tomas Berdych was a hard-
fought quarterfinal winner Thursday at the $4.5 million Sony Ericsson Open,
an ATP World Tour Masters event.
The 16th-seeded Berdych came from behind to beat 10th-seeded Spanish
lefthander Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 on the hardcourts at Crandon
Park. The capable Berdych stunned world No. 1 superstar Roger Federer in the
fourth round here on Tuesday night.
Verdasco appeared to be in control here on Day 9, up a set and leading 3-1 in
the second, but Berdych was able to turn the match around.
The inconsistent Czech pushed the second set into a tiebreak, which he
basically controlled, and recorded the first service break of the third set to
take a 4-3 lead in the final stanza.
Berdych prevailed after 2 hours, 51 minutes of action with one final forehand
winner. Verdasco hurt his own cause with six double faults in the
disappointing setback.
The 24-year-old Berdych will now appear in his fifth career Masters semifinal
(1-3). He won a Masters title in Paris in 2005.
The 6-foot-5 Berdych will meet the Robin Soderling-Mikhail Youzhny victor here
on Friday. The fifth-seeded Soderling was last year's French Open runner-up to
Federer. Youzhny is seeded 13th at this lucrative 12-day tournament.
The other semifinal was determined here on Wednesday, as former world No. 1s
Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick will do battle on Friday. The sixth-seeded
Roddick titled here in 2004, while the fourth-seeded Nadal was the Miami
runner-up in 2005 and 2008.
Roddick was the runner-up at the Masters event at Indian Wells two weeks ago.
The newest champion here will collect $605,500.
