Upsets came when Chilean Nicolas Massu took out sixth-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 6-2 and Spaniard Nicolas Almagro overcame eighth-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Seventh-seeded Argentine Agustin Calleri avoided an upset by dousing his promising countryman Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 6-3. Additional first-round wins came for Argentines Juan Ignacio Chela and qualifier Juan Monaco and American Mardy Fish, who got past his compatriot Robert Kendrick 6-2, 6-4. In second-round action here on Thursday, top-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo will battle his countryman Alberto Martin, while Ancic will encounter Fish and Hrbaty will face German Philipp Kohlschreiber. Thursday's eight second-round matches will be followed by the four quarterfinal bouts, as eight men will see double-duty on Day 4.
